We live in a world that given the recent crises that have befallen us, can be best described as a montage. We live in a time that is cursed with the existence, along with ample viruses to endanger human kind, of a society whose functioning is dictated almost entirely by patriarchy, racism, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia and I could go on for an eternity with a list of all those elements that our society has embodied in the former years. The years that have tattooed an unending number of social evils and practices in our minds and in the whole mindset of our society.
De facto, in one like ours, to be born a girl, to later recognise as somebody other than a cisgender heterosexual male or for that matter, being a person of colour is considered to be one of the greatest tragedies today.
We are cursed to exist in a world where a girl when dreams of doing something or becoming somebody that is not "typical" of a female, her professional preferences are subject to ridicule. She is told not be fantastical but a realist and to pursue a profession and a career path that she might be "suitable" for. Women are subjected to defamation whenever society sees an opportunity. They are taught how to "be careful and safe" and that "Men will be Men" while we rarely think of teaching boys how to take responsibility.
Females, however, aren't the only victims to this oppression. As a matter of fact, 70% of all LGBTQIA people have reportedly been harassed at work at some point in their lives, while more than one third of lesbian, gay, bisexual undergraduates have been harassed within the past year. In a recent survey conducted by NBC, more than half of the LGBTQ+ people surveyed have claimed to have been harassed and discriminated at places of work and learning along with public places.
In spite of living in the 21st century, we continue to bear witness of systematic racism. We continue to deny people of colour the respect that those with a fair complexion are showered with. This is not the case in the United States of America alone but in a country like India as well.
The only way we can stop the ever so chauvinist society from flourishing is to work for it and to let our mindsets and those of the people around us evolve freeing them from the shackles of "what will they say?" and "what will they think about us?". We need to pave the way for change to come, we need to be the first to do so, in order for people to follow. We must cease to base beauty upon complexion, stability upon wealth and power upon gender.
In order to enforce change, we must begin at the very roots of the adversary's strengths, the mindset. Change will be brought almost entirely out of the evolution of the mindsets of those around us. Let's educate. Let's make aware the people of the injustices taking place all around them and teach them as to how they can help eradicate them instead of turning a blind eye to the toxicity of society at large.
Revolution awaits. More eagerly now, than ever.
